FAQs on Student-Athlete Performance at Notre Dame

In the most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate Report (GSR), released in November 2024, Notre Dame had a 99 percent GSR for all student-athletes, meaning that 99 percent of Notre Dame student-athletes who received athletics-based aid graduated within six years of enrolling. (The NCAA GSR excludes any student-athletes on aid who transfer out of the institution while eligible to compete and includes any student-athletes who transfer in and receive aid.) Notre Dame ranked first among all 134 NCAA institutions that compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Notre Dame has been among the nation’s top three in the GSR among FBS institutions for 18 consecutive years and has led the nation in 16 of those 18 years.

The NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a real-time metric of the academic progress of students on athletics aid, measuring the number of students on athletics aid who remain enrolled at an institution and eligible to compete. (Students who transfer and enroll immediately at another four-year institution are removed from the cohort). In the most recently released APR (for academic year 2023-2024), Notre Dame led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions, with seventeen of Notre Dame’s twenty-four sports posting perfect APRs of 1000. Notre Dame's number of perfect APR scores has ranked either first or second among FBS institutions every year in the 19-year history of the APR.

Notre Dame does not offer “asynchronous” online classes (i.e., classes where students submit work independently and have minimal contact with instructors). Notre Dame student-athletes enroll in the same undergraduate majors as all other students. The most popular majors for student-athletes in 2023 and 2024 were Finance, Psychology, Strategic Management, Marketing, Business Analytics, and Political Science.
